Two Vergil Songs (2000) is a set of two settings of two poems by the Ancient Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro (70–19 BC). The work is dedicated to Ray Perez. The poems are set in their original classical Latin, and a classical Latin pronunciation (not church Latin) should be used when performing the work. The text is used verbatim although elisions are not used in the musical setting. Both texts are taken from Vergil's Priapae, a hymn to the god Priapus— set from the god's perspective. The first song, Vere rosa, displays the spare bleakness of winter as Priapus laments what might happen to his statue in the cold of winter. The second song, Ego haec, is full of the jubilant bustle of spring and the travel and celebrations it brings.
