Program Notes
Evoking both literal and metaphorical qualities of flight, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday night premiered the first in a series of commissioned works commemorating the centennial of the Wright brothers' historic achievement during the orchestra's first Classical Series concert of 2003. The program featured To Fly Unbounded, by Steven Winteregg, who like his musical subjects, is a Dayton-area native. The work for orchestra and chorus is a musical setting of poetry by Walt Whitman and another influential Dayton son, Paul Laurence Dunbar. Winteregg's new piece contains four related yet distinct sections, connected not only by their subject matter, but also by melodic, harmonic and rhythmic themes. What's more, the arc of the main musical motif, which moves through the various voices of the different instrument sections, seems to be echoed in the arc of the whole work, which literally soars among the heavens in the hymn-like third section, before a triumphant return to Earth in the final measures. Programmatic in the sense that the listener is carried along on buoyant music that reaches of the celestial, the work isn't the programmatic sort that literally translates a story. It's more emotional than textual -- although the text of the poems plays an important part, becoming another sound piece as sung by the accomplished Dayton Philharmonic Chorus. -- Carol Simmons, Dayton Daily News. Jan. 25, 2003.

Review
"Well within the performance capabilities of any decent choir and orchestra." --Neal Gittleman.

"Stephen Winteregg is Dayton's foremost composer. He writes music of immediate appeal, full of melody and not cloyed by sentimentality. I find his music to be full of interesting nuances, special tonal colors and rhythms....Often, new music is greeted with diffidence at first hearing. Steve Winteregg has the musical key to instant appeal."
-- Burt Saidel, The Oakwood Register
