Robert Layton's review of the Koch Records release of Gerber's Serenade praised it as "memorable and individual...splendidly inventive theme and variations, deftly using the techniques of minimalism." "This is real music, splendidly played and recorded, and this (recording) cannot be too highly recommended to those who, like us, welcome the end of the twentieth-century's disastrous experiment with 'twelve-tone' writing."

Program Notes
The String Serenade (an earlier work from 1989-90) is hardly less memorable and individual, opening with a yearning, expressive cantilena, but soon becoming rhythmically more spiky. The second movement is a splendidly inventive theme and variations, deftly using the techniques of minimalism (about which the composer expresses his doubts) as accompanimental figuration. This is real music, splendidly played and recorded, and this Koch CD cannot be too highly recommended to those who, like us, welcome the end of the twentieth-century's disastrous experiment with 'twelve-tone' writing. --Robert Layton
