My 4th Quartet is in two highly contrasted movements: Fast; Intense and Slow, Hypnotic. The materials and atmosphere could hardly be much more differentiated between the two, but they are to be played without pause. It was written in New York and Seattle during my Sabbatical from Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, and completed on February 8, 1997. The Quartet is dedicated to the memory of composer John Richard Ronsheim, my late colleague. -David Stock
