Shaker Tunes for Brass Quintet were composed on commission for the Constitution Brass Quintet of Vermont during 1993-4.  Subsequent to the April 1994 premiere, the CBQ has toured the state of Vermont, offering performances of the Shaker Tunes in rural churches and community concert halls.

Shaker Tunes for Brass Quintet may be performed simply as an instrumental suite.  However, many of the performances in Vermont have involved a small choir singing the Shaker melodies, separately, preceding each of the brass versions.  This choral participation serves to introduce the audience to the Shaker melodies.  It also offers a satisfying 'framing' to the brass music.

For this purpose, a cappella SATB arrangement of the songs are provided in the appendix to the score.  Permission is given to photocopy these arrangements for the choir.

The Shakers were an 18th and 19th century religious sect based in the Northeastern United States.  Singing was a featured part of Shaker life, often accompanied by dance and the clapping of hands.  Thus, a rich and lively repertoire of music was created.  The songs upon which the brass arrangements are based were collected from 19th century communities in Maine, New Hampshire and New York.  -Gwyneth Walker
