Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed this MASS IN C MAJOR, K. 167 (MISSA TRINITATIS) in 1773 for a performance in the Salzburg cathedral. It is the only mass which he provided with a dedication (in honor of the Most Holy Trinity). In view of the relatively full orchestral scoring, it is surprising to note the absence of the violas. Perhaps this is merely due to a local Salzburg peculiarity. It is more likely though, that the violas simply played the bass line an octave higher. In comparison with other early masses by Mozart, a turn to a more polyphonic setting is undeniable, due perhaps to the influence of Michael Haydn and Padre Martini.
