An Angry Darkness was composed in 1990 and revised in 1991 for the Florida State University New Music Ensemble. The title and primary agenda of the work comes from a poem that I wrote. It is my intention to portray a sense of primal anger brought forth by the inability to answer the existential question. I have used The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives as both musical and metaphorical material. It is in "The Question" as presented by the trumpet that I have found much inspiration. My solutions for the "Invisible Answer", however, are no more comforting or revealing than those given by the "Fighting Answerers" found in' the Ives work. In the end there is only anger at the "Silences" and frustration with the question. It is not enough... shades of twilight glisten and fade a Prayer - a Cry into empty silence... sounds of an angry darkness --Carl Harrison
