Program Notes
Divertissement may be described as a jocoserious, quasi-palindromic collage, a tongue-in-cheek pastiche which is part transcription, part stylistic allusion, part literal quotation, part "original" music. Woven into the compositional fabric are strands from works by Mozart, Liszt, Claude Gervaise and George Rochberg. Unlike the usual collage, however, the piece is not concerned with a cinematographic projection of unrelated aural images, but rather strives for thematic and tonal cohesiveness among separate and independent musical elements. One critic referred to Divertissement as "a frolicsome romp through music history." Although I typically disdain the opinions (negative or positive) of professional music critics, I must confess that I find this particular comment very much to my liking. --Claude Baker

Review
"Divertissement is a charming little work...an essay in musical Postmodernism...that has repertoire as its theme...the quotes are important only for what they represent, that is, the vast body of universally acknowledged Great Music against which the efforts of the living composer are supposed to compete."--James Wierzbicki, St. Louis Post Dispatch <BR><BR> "Baker...lingers on the past, and lovingly so, humorously so...In Divertissement, he introduces delightful approximations of classical and romantic styles with droll excesses of melodic invention and ornamentation. Mixed in are interruptions of just as excessive contemporary material. The gentle satire is obvious."<BR> -- Peter Jacobi, The Herald Times
