Program Notes
Prayers (2001) for guitar and organ was commissioned by and is dedicated to guitarist Herbert Levine. The work is in two movements, exploring contrasting mood and forms of prayer. "A Prayer for Healing" is quiet and subdued, with quiet emotion and earnestness. It is cast in the form of verse and response -- alternating very slow verses (in 4/4 meter) with faster responses (in 12/8 meter). A canon tune titled "Healing" from William Walker's early American hymnal, The Southern Harmony (1835), is quoted both in the guitar and organ parts. In the end, the final response begins, but stops and a quotation from the opening verse leads to a final earnest plea -- repeated like a litany, and then dying away to silence. "A Prayer of Joy and Thanksgiving" is fast and excited. The harmonic material of the first movement is transformed into a song of praise. --Carson Cooman
