Schifrin's Capriccio consists of two movements: the first one rather introspective, and its internal tonal structure is based on the extension of middle eastern scales into a polymodal language. The second movement is joyful in character and is loosely based on the rhythms of Israeli folk dances. Commissioned by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Capriccio was recorded by David Scifrin with the Adelaide Symphony on Aleph Records.

Program Notes
The Capriccio is primarily a study for clarinet, in the sense that it explores the different possibilities of the instrument -- its capacity to express somber and menacing moods or luminous landscapes and its great technical agility. The piece is in two movements. The first one is rather introspective, and its internal tonal structure is based on the extension of middle eastern scales into a polymodal language. This result is achieved by a rigorous manipulation of internal-relationships. The second movement is joyful in character and is loosely based on the rhythms of Israeli folk dances. The piece is truly 'concertante' since the string orchestra is used not only to provide a framework for the soloist but to stimulate an organic and functional dialogue. The Capriccio for Clarinet and Strings was premiered in 1981 by the Israeli Philharmonic with Elie Eban as soloist, and was later performed by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra with David Shifrin as soloist. --Lalo Schifrin
