Program Notes
Warren Benson's response to the Ithaca College Centennial commission for a wind ensemble work is a reflective and lyrical Adagietto of about a ten minute duration. Characterized by a lifting repeated note answered by a rising-falling echo, its lines are sinewy, soloistic and fragile. All are characteristics of Benson's wind writing. Even in those moments of climactic reach transparency prevails in its language- both inclusive and personal. The rhythms are natural, suggesting improvisation, spontaneity; and the small tensions carried over several phrases tend to build a compelling harmonic stretch. Benson's music is direct, simple in means. The virtuosic demands on the performers are those of great refinement and control - a vulnerability in such a sonic environment. In this, Benson's works for winds are unique.
