Program Notes
Dark Moons/Bright Shadows was written for the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra (Indiana). When the conductor, David Pickett, asked me to write a major work for the orchestra, I eventually decided on a piece shaped by contrasting, yet parallel sections. The first and third sections are slow and share some similar ideas. The first section is in four parts with the initial part featuring flutes and clarinets in somewhat virtuosic figurations over sustained cluster chords; the second part features the brass sections articulating cluster chords; a brief third section uses passages and then finally the fourth part with brass chords leading to the second major section which is substantially faster. This section is characterized by a somewhat rigid figure that gradually grows in intensity to a full orchestral statement. The following slow section has two major elements: a basso ostinato which is continuously 'colored' by several instruments and a short melodic figure drawn from a similar interval in the ostinato. The final section (fast) is an A B A form with a toccata-like line built on a chromatic figuration alternating with an arpeggiated and fragmented melody which is non-toccata-like. The 'A' returns, this time harmonized, and leads directly to the coda. Dark Moon/Bright Shadows, a fifteen minute work, is scored for a slightly reduced standard symphony orchestra: double woodwinds, normal size brass, harp, strings, and three percussion players. It is a work designed for community and youth orchestras. It was composed during the summer of 1991 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. --Frederick Fox
