"Canti di Davide is dedicated to David Shifrin and to the memory of David Golub.  These two Davids were best friends and I have been privileged over the past 20 years to know them as friends and artists.  In June 2000 my wife and I were vacationing in Venice and were looking forward to the upcoming premiere of my piano trio, New York Nocturnes by the Golub/Kaplan/Carr Trio at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon. We received a disturbing phone message from David Shifrin, artistic director of the festival.  David Golub had just canceled his appearances and would not be coming to Portland.  He had a persistent cough, which he thought was caused by allergies. Three months later David Golub, great pianist and dear friend, died of lung cancer at the age of fifty.  I had been planning to write a concerto for David Shifrin for some time; over the past 20 years I have written four works for him and have had the great pleasure hearing him perform each summer at Chamber Music Northwest.  Now I decided to compose the concerto to the memory of our mutual friend.

David Golub divided his life between Italy and America and had apartments in Milan and New York.  Canti di Davide is in one sense a journey, eastward to Italy; the first two movements are American, the last two Italian, while the middle movement contains both elements.

1. Lament, Anguished.  Here the clarinet often plays in cantorial style.
2. Big Al. Scherzando.  David Golub was so fond of telling an unprintable joke known to most musicians involving quintuple time that his friends called him Big Al.  This is my picture of David walking down Broadway.
3. Consolation.  The out sections are in the style of a jazz ballad; the central episode is like a coloratura vocalise.
4. Corsa Magenta.  Fast. Corso Magenta is a busy street in Milan near David and Maria Golub's home. The movement reflects the energy of Milan as well as some of its musical traditions.
5. Isola San Michele,  When we were in Venice we visited Stravinsky's grave on Isola San Michele, an island that is entirely a cemetery.  As the resting place of a great musician I felt it was the destination for the musical journey that begins in shock and turmoil and here finds peace. --David Schiff
