"The Gathering" was commissioned during the summer of 1986 by the North Carolina Symphony Education Program, Jackson Parkhurst, director, with the assistance from a grant by Mr. and Mrs. Ben K. Gibbs. The composition was given thirty performances across North Carolina during the Symphony's 1986-87 season.

"The Gathering" is designed to serve as an instrumental demonstration for use on children's concerts and other audience development programs. Methods of performance will vary according to programming needs:

1. Begin with empty stage (with or without conductor). Instruments come on one section at a time as needed. This may be inappropriate if the composition does not begin the program or second half. Conductor should enter no later than variation XI.

2. Begin normally with musicians seated and conductor present.

3. Narrate composition. The end of each variation may be treated as a vamp in which the conductor speaks about the instrument which will play or just played. This can be done with an educational and/or comic intent.

The composition is written for a professional or accomplished semiprofessional orchestra.
