Program Notes
My CONCERT ARIA was completed in 1981, and is dedicated to Geoffrey Rutkowski. I wanted to compose a piece which would capitalize on the wonderful singing qualities of his playing--thus, a concert aria. It is a work in one movement, which gradually moves to the scherzo-like conclusion. Throughout, it utilizes the intervals of the octave and fifth, stated quite clearly near the beginning of the work in the 'cello. The orchestral textures are mostly accompanimental. I continue to use a very elaborate cueing technique, in which the performers must react much as they do when engaged in playing chamber music. I developed this technique when I was Composer-in-Residence with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra, and have been refining it over the years. For performers to react independently within the framework of the orchestra is very demanding. Most important, though, is the 'cello part. In it I've invested what I want to say. --Edward Applebaum
