There were, at times, tales from rural areas in the United States of farmers finding grain fields and pastures having small sections mysteriously crushed or trampled. The reality was that young persons and carousing adults would sneak off with a musician or two and dance and perhaps party. Dancing, in many circles, was considered to be a sinful activity and quite often was prohibited by law. The leaders and elders of the communities, of course, knew that their children and relatives were dancing causing the 'mysterious' areas, but could not stop such activity and did not want to acknowledge that their kin and neighbors were engaged in such sinful acts. Their explanation was that it must be the work of the devil; hence, a devil's tramping ground. Devil's Tramping Ground, completed in March, 1991, is a septet scored for flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, cello, percussion and piano. In one movement, there are multiple sections of varying character which are, in some cases, dance-like. --Frederick Fox
