Triptych-Fantasy for Trumpet and Strings (2001) was commissioned by John Morris for the 75th birthday of his wife Barbara (who played the trumpet in her youth).  The work is a short, lyrical concerto for trumpet and string orchestra.  The work is dedicated to Barbara Morris on her 75th birthday and to Sofia Gubaidulina on her 70th birthday.

The musical material for the work is based on the famous Southern hymn tune "Wondrous Love" from William Walker's seminal 1835 American Hymnal, The Southern Harmony.

As the title implies, the work is both in three "panels" (sections) and is a continuous fantasy and transformation of the hymn tune material.

the first (slow) section, opens with a presentation of the hymn tune in its most straightforward form over whirring figurations in the strings.  This leads directly to the presentation of the tune's first transformation into another melody which is combined with the original tune.  This leads directly to the second section.  In the second (fast) section, interlocking ostinati presented by pizzicato string provide the backdrop for  the trumpet part which weaves through, around, and over it.  The final (slow) section, is similar to the opening one as the hymn tune is heard again in fragmented form before the closing moments. --Carson Cooman
