The Seasons of Oling is one in a series entitle, The Uses of Music in Uttermost Parts, which represents a ten year collaboration between the composer and writer Ursula K. Le Guin. The pieces, which total eight, explore an imaginary archipelago where each island has a specific use for music. Together the music and text guide the listener through a journey in which music is used as food, roads and walls, weaving, love potion and in one case, even the island itself. The Seasons of Oling explores an island on which the weather is experienced as music in gaseous, liquid and solid form. --Elinor Armer "What if music could be used as food? As water? What if it functioned as roads, walls, weaving, or love potion? Composer Elinor Armer and writer Ursula Le Guin have imagined a group of islands where just such phenomena occur; it is called The Uttermost Archipelago. Since 1988, these intrepid artists have explored several of the islands and have chronicled their findings in a musical fantasy, entitled USES OF MUSIC IN UTTERMOST PARTS. "Not surprisingly, this fantasy is of such proportion that it has spawned eight works - for chamber ensemble, orchestra, mixed chorus, girls chorus, and other delightful combinations. Enthusiastic audience response and critical acclaim have greeted performances of the works, and the series was featured on National Public Radio. The collaboration is a natural outgrowth of the compatibility of Armer+s music with Le Guin+s writing, in which imagery and innovative combinations of words and music are rich and plentiful. Armer+s setting of a Le Guin text in 1982 was followed by a mutual decision to develop a joint project +from scratch,+ and USES OF MUSIC IN UTTERMOST PARTSwas born. The entire series is recorded on KOCH International (3-7331-2Y6x2). --John Elkus (1995)
