NIGHT WALTZ was composed in 1987 for Paul Century; it was commissioned for Mr. Century by the Esperia Foundation.  It is, in all senses, a Guitar Concerto.  The soloist is featured throughout the entire 14 minutes duration.  The opening phrase provides the harmonic vocabulary, with the guitar emerging from the orchestral textures.  The first fast section then introduces the main theme in the guitar.  Slow arpeggios in the winds and flexatone introduce the next section which give way to the first "jazz" statement in the guitar, which is slowly and increasingly more lyrical.  The strings emerge from the orchestral fabric with a very intense passage featuring the first cellist.  Gradually the Cadenza arrives giving the soloist music which utilizes all of the ideas previously stated, transforming them into the powerful orchestral section which follows.  The solo joins in and from nowhere, the Night Waltz.  It is stated once, and the piece ends quietly with the solo cello.

There are no musical terms to describe this design.  It is a kind of mosaic revealed completely only at the end with the placement of the final small piece, in this case the Night Waltz.  Thus, the structure of the work is derived more from the way people actually live than from a prordained musical form.  It's a happy, jazzy-fun piece.
