Shortly before the composition of Changes, I was driving around looking for a place to take a picture of my new car when I happened on a junk yard. Perfect, I thought. The juxtaposition of new against old -- the image of a shiny new automobile set against the rusty remnants of its ancestors. Likewise, this piece reflects my interest in the coexistence of disparate elements and the humor that often results. The work's musical language "changes" many times, always returning to tonal, two-part melodic passages based on chord "changes" from All the Things You Are by Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern
