Program Notes
The piece is dedicated to Peter Alexander. It is in four movements. The first is designated Gentle and Slow; the second is Lively and Light. The third movement is Variations on a Catskill Mountain Folk Song, based on a slightly modal tune I found in Herbert Haufrecht's collection. The theme is played unaccompanied by the strings, followed by seven variations and a fugue. The last movement is an introduction and fast movement in straight 4/4 time. After the many changes of the variations, I wanted the last movement to be very straightforward. But it is not in any form I know of. --Robert Starer
