Program Notes
Hommage, which will have its premiere in orchestral form tonight, is a piece originally for string quartet. Written while Ms. Wachsman was a graduate student at Boston University, it was performed often by the university's honors string ensemble, the Appalachian String Quartet, of which she was the cellist. It is just one movement of a larger work, though it gained immediate popularity and overshadowed the other movements to the degree that the others were never performed. The quartet version of Hommage was featured in a composition masterclass given by Leonard Bernstein. It was performed frequently by the Appalachian String Quartet in a concert tour of France in 1983. In addition, several other ensembles have performed the work, including the New England Quartet, the Lafayette String Quartet, and the Hawaii String Quartet. In 1993, a few modifications were made and a part for bass was incorporated into the piece, transforming it now into a work for string orchestra. In the first section two lyrical themes are stated, one built primarily on the interval of a fourth, the next one using mostly the whole-tone scale. A premonition of the agitated, rhythmic middle section is hinted at briefly when the second violin and viola carry an ostinato figure of sixteenth notes. The middle section is primarily rhythmic, distinguishing itself with techniques such as ponticello (the bow is played on or near the bridge), pizzicato (the strings are plucked with the fingers) and strong accents. Added to this texture, eventually, are fragments of the previously-heard lyrical themes, a little less lyrically now. The last section is a recapitulation of the events in the first two, combining many themes at once, and ending serenely in E-flat
