Program Notes
Bruce Adolphe's The Purple Palace is a delightful musical tale of the importance of tolerance and diversity. The story, written by Louise Gikow, is about the land of Chromatica: King Blue and Queen Red have a daughter, Purple. She becomes Queen and outlaws all other colors. She quickly discovers that an all-purple world is no fun--and is even dangerous since she can't see anything in her now monochrome land! Her tears cause a green plant to grow. This plant is visited by a striped bee from outside the kingdom. Eventually, the decree is revoked and all the colors flood back to Chromatica. The piece is funny but also touching and dramatic. All the colors have themes which fit together in counterpoint, causing a kind of layered reltationship as the colors are illustrated musically.
