Program Notes
The composition's autumnal spirit reflects the essential character of each of the solo instruments, and the piece serves as a sort of paean to the most interesting of all seasons. The work is based on only two themes, both of which are heard in the opening measures. The first--calm and pastoral in nature--is presented very softly by the strings and harp, then echoed by the oboe. The second theme, introduced by the English horn in its second entrance, is more chromatic, mysterious, and complex. It is this theme, taken up next by the violas, that becomes the focus of the slow opening section. After being passed to the oboe, and then the first violins, it comes to a brief but dramatic climax for full orchestra. The music then returns to an atmosphere of greater calm, with the solo instruments lazily ruminating on the themes. It is the first theme, however, that tends to dominate the rapid middle section, appearing as a series of variations (the first, an extended passage for orchestra alone), connected by short cadenza-interludes for the solo instruments. An extended dance-like episode comes to a joyous climax, leading to the final section, which--surprisingly--begins in a tragic, almost funereal, mood. The gloom dissipates quickly, but like autumn itself the music is continuously shifting in mood as it proceeds to its peaceful conclusion. --Robert O. Johnson
