Program Notes
When I decided to write a short piece for Melissa Matson, to celebrate her appointment as principal violist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, my thoughts turned to her skills with weaving, working with materials in collage, and quilting. A number of these quilts are displayed in her home, and one of her collage pieces (which she called “Catherine’s Quilt”) was made for my wife Catherine Tait. I decided that the piece I would write would be a single movement of episodes that were put together in a “patchwork,” with episodes following each other as the music progresses. The music is also concerned with a kind of homespun “Americanism” in tone and subject matter, as I imagined the craft of quilting. Finally, I wrote the music as a duet for viola and marimba, choosing these instruments for their shared “alto” quality.
