Program Notes
Elegy was composed in 1981 and was given its premiere performance by Jerry Young. It was composed to reflect and express the mixture of emotions commonly felt after the death of another person. Some sections suggest a type of mournful chant. Echoes are produced throughout the composition by playing the tuba into a piano in which the strings are free to vibrate sympathetically. As an echo is a remembrance of sound, "Elegy" is in remembrance of those no longer with us.
