Program Notes
Soon after I arrived in Seattle to begin my year as Composer in Residence of the Seattle Symphony, Maestro Schwarz shared with me his plans for the opening of Benaroya Hall. He was planning a program featuring all of the orchestra's former Composers in Residence, and said, quite casually, "It would be great if you could write a new piece!" All of the 1996-97 season I was busy with other projects: My Second Symphony (which the Seattle Symphony subsequently premiered March 1998), my Fourth String Quartet, and A LITTLE MIRACLE (which Maestro Schwarz will premiere with the New York Chamber Symphony in March 1999). Thus, I couldn't give much thought to this request until spring. In April 1997, I was driving to the home of Susan Gulkis, Seattle Symphony's Principal Violist, to see her about renting her house for the month of July, when my wife and I would return to Seattle. Suddenly it hit me--I'd love to write a viola concerto for Susan! Thus, I had the unusual pleasure of writing for a soloist in her own house! I hope some of her warm personality is evident in the character of the music. The concerto was completed in August 1997 in Santa Fe. It is in three movements, played without pause: I.Moving Forward Gently II.Slow Waltz III.Calm, Serene A cadenza links the first movement to the second. The work was commissioned with a grant from the Fishman Family Foundation. I'm grateful to the Fishman family for giving me the opportunity to write for such a wonderful soloist. --David Stock

Review
"Stock's Viola Concerto...is striking in its restless energy, intensity and mercurial temperment. This is a good addition to the repertory."--SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER
