Program Notes
Fresco for Symphony Wind Band was written in 1985. The first performance was on June 27, 1985 in Washington, D.C. at the 8th World Saxophone Congress by Eugene Rousseau as soloist and the U.S. Navy Band conducted by Ray Cramer. The idea of the Fresco originates in a symphonic composition "Three Frescoes for Symphonic orchestra: Feld had written in 1963. The composer thought the first Fresco was very suitable for the wind band and recomposed it completely in 1985 creating a new work for band. The title is not accidental, even though the composition was not inspired by some specific work of art. The author had in mind the method of working out of large areas with "broad brushstroke," in which detail, though important, perceptible and carefully finished at a close view, is fully subordinated to the whole. The Fresco is in mirror form, although the symmetry is not quite consistent. The melodic and harmonic structure is dodecaphonic, the orchestration transparent, very important is the role of lively rhythmical pulsation. This very exacting composition requires a virtuoso, animated and accurate reproduction to achieve an impressive and joyful musical effect. --Jindrich Feld
