Program Notes
Cliffhanger March is the final movement of an extended work commisssioned in 1982 by the famous American bandmaster, Clifford Hite. The march itself is comprised of three sections that evolve from the opening seven-bar march phrase. A "tongue-in-cheek" parody of traditional marches, the work presents a humourous, distorted capsule view of many traditional "marchisms" as the material(s) progress towards a rousing, yet deflating finale...but not before the piece acknowledges two extremely influential band works (?) in an effort to assimilate and convert the otherwise astringent and crepuscular motion from one theatrical gesture to the next. The work contains no serial applications, no Shenkarian techniques, nor process immorality, but is high in sugar and caffeine.
