Program Notes
The Chamber Concerto I was composed in 1977 for contrabassist Bertram Turetzky, and premiered by him that year at the Bennington (Vermont) Chamber Music Conference. That performance utilized an accompanying ensemble of only 11 players [as in tonight's performance], though subsequent performances have used ensembles ranging from the basic 11 to full orchestra (the Milwaukee Symphony). This was the first of a series of Chamber Concertos that have occupied my attention. (The others feature clarinet, piano, saxophone and bassoon as respective soloists.) In all of these works I was trying to find a middle-ground between a showy, virtuosic style (suitable perhaps for traditional 'concerto' display) and a more intimate, chamber-like integration of instrumental color and gesture. On a different level, I was also concerned with the interaction of tonal and non-tonal materials, often in overlapping strands-the musical languages of present and immediate past juxtaposed in often surprising ways - and a theatrical, even visual, approach to the ritual of concert performance. These concerns are, still important in my recent work. --Elliott Schwartz
